Zen and the art of being Mama

A whole lotta mama searching for a little zen

What to do… what to do? March 31, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — mamazen @ 11:07 am

It’s friday. Yippie!!! And I’m off till TUESDAY. Yep.. TUESDAY. I don’t work fridays, and next week the ND that I share space with wanted to work monday, so I have a four day weekend. HEAVEN! Today I’ve been up since 7:30.. and am still in my jammies. Oh.. lucky me. Having second breakfast right now. MMMMMMMMM second breakfast.

So.. with 4 days off, i have a long list of things i’d like to do.

1. Paint in the nursery. Last weekend, I was working on a piece of furniture that I bought YEARS ago at good will for diapers. Well, I didn’t buy it years ago for diapers… It’s a three tiered bin that once said “bread, potatoes, onions” that will now be for cloth diapers, covers and something else. I’m painting it with the bright colors of the mural, and saw some dirt in one of the bins…. well it wasnt’ dirt, it was glass, so I was off painting duty for a few days while my thumb healed. So now that the bandaid is off, and i can grip without discomfort… I’m back to painting!

2. Knit. I think I’ll save this for after painting when my back is sore, or evenings while watching Six Feet Under :D wahoo!! It came from Netflix this week!!! It’s gonna b e a sweet weekend of movies! I have several projects on the needles
a. MIL bday present. Couldn’t work on this with the bum thumb. Needles too small. (can’t say what it is yet, as she reads!)
b. Mom’s bday pressie… can’t say what it is either cause she reads here too! Go away mothers!!! I haven’t worked on this all week cause i’ve been so tired. Hard to do a project like this when your brain is dead.
c. Soakers for the Triplets. I have one done, and one on the sticks…. Hopefully I’ll get the last ones finishe up, as she’s set to deliver the babies the second of may. I made them for 8-12lbs, so they won’t be wearing them right away, but I’d like to make some preemie onesies that say “i was worth the wait” for her babes too… As I said, all infertiles need those!
d. I’d like to start another sweater for my babe… maybe a simple kimono style sweater out of cotton for those cool summer nights. and some matching booties. I have some lovely organic cotton that would be perfect. :)
e. Of course I still have Ryan’s sweater, but since summer is coming, and it’s Alpaca, it will have to wait. it’s only been on the sticks for….. um…. 13 months. Yeah, i’m a great wife.

3. Onesies (see above) for the trips, and for my friend kelly who is off to Guatemala this weekend to pick up her adopted son Kevin! I AM SO HAPPY FOR HER!!! He was born in October, so I’m pretty sure I’ll need to make a larger size onesie for him. I have a soaker for him also, but not sure if it will fit :( Anyway… got to get with the program as he’ll be stateside by next wednesday, and I’d love to have the package waiting for them!

4. Cloth wipes for the babe. yes.. for those that don’t know, many cloth diaper users make (or buy) cloth wipes that are just several layers of serged flannel. Its much softer and if you’re washing poopy dipes, why not just wash the wipes too? less chemicals, and better on the baby bum. So I may head over to the craft thirft store and pick up some flannel and play with my serger.

I think that’s all for now….. where should I start? Well, I guess I should jump in the shower, cause I’m getting a pedicure (I do trade with a friend – she gets free chiro treatment, and I get free pedis! it’s great when you can’t bend over comfortably!)in a couple of hours and need to grab some groceries first. i’m making my famous baked ziti for some friends who’s mom is in the hospital. Hmmmm maybe I’ll hit the fabric store while I’m out. :)

I am burning up the finished object list. Sort of….

Pattern Roll Top Booties from 50 Baby Booties to knit by Zoe Mellor
Yarn – some baby yarn from my stash (yes, that means I accomplished two things, I finished something, and I used stash yarn!
Started a few days ago, finished, yesterday.

I’ve also finished another baby item… but I can’t post it till tomorrow, as it needs a ribbon. Tonight I’m planning on weaving in the ends of another baby sweater, and maybe work on the birthday gift for my MIL.

I may start my mom’s birthday gift, but won’t post any pix till I tell her to steer clear of this blog!

Look! A finished object… or two!!! March 19, 2006

Started – on the plane to Cancun – Finished on the plane home :D And I wove in the ends and blocked today! Go me!
Love this pattern. so easy, fun and quick. Yarn was easy to work with, although I didn’t like knitting in the heat, so I only knit a bit at night in the hotel :)

I have a problem…. March 18, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — mamazen @ 4:10 pm

Yes, I have a serious problem. It’s not fatal, and I know so so so many knitters who have it. But… folks, I’ve got it bad. Startits and Neverfinishit-itis. I have SO MANY projects either almost done, half done, done and not woven in/blocked…. it’s so sad.
Here’s the list that I KNOW about.

Done and need to be woven/blocked
1. Dark green wool baby cardi
2. Dark green wool baby oh alls
3. Pink Cotton Easy Peasy cardi for friends baby
4. 2 wool ribby wraps that need buttons
5. soaker shorts (purple/blue)
6. Soaker (needs i cord)
7. Yellow/blue cotton cardi made on vacation

Half finished or nearly finished
1. Ryan’s sweater (not even half)
2. 2 soakers
3. Cabled Shrug
4. Wrap cardi from Rebecca 29 (I’ll probably frog this and make it something else – as I’m over this pattern)
5. Koigu socks started on vacation

I’m sure there is more.. but these are the things in my line of sight that I should just FINISH! And yet…. After cleaning house today while waiting for my parents to arrive, you know what i did???? Oh… you know…. Yes, I looked through some pattern books and chose some yarn to start a new project. It’s a sickness. but… I NEED to make baby stuff! I NEED to knit some booties! I NEEEEEEEEEEED TO! My baby is depending on me!!! So… I’m trying to make a deal with myself to not start anything new till I completely finish and block one thing. But….. (oh you knew this was coming) I can’t do that! The bed i block stuff on is where my parents are sleeping this weekend… so I’ll do it tomorrow.. really, I will. I swear. I promise. Scouts honor. :)

maybe.

vacation rocks! March 15, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — mamazen @ 10:03 pm

Vacation is the BEST. Seriously….. the B E S T. (if you read my pregnancy blog – this is a double post!)

I’ll tell you all about it in three different posts… One for each of the places we stayed in.

So… first… we flew into Cancun, picked up our rental car and headed for Playa del Carmen. Ah…. We stayed three days at Casa de las Flores.

A lovely little hotel about 5 blocks from the ocean, run by the sweetest Italian woman.

We were pretty pooped from travelling, so we grabbed a bite to eat and relaxed on the big king sized bed that was decorated with crazy towel art.

The next day we hit the beach. Isn’t the water delicious!

We slathered ourselves with sunscreen and spent a little time in the sun…. (yeah I look like a white whale!) a lot of time in the shade…. and a ton of time in the water!

I SWEAR I put sunscreen all overmyself. I may be half mexican, and therefore start off a little more brown than most people.. but I’m no fool! However, apparently if you put on sunscreen, then walk through the surf, then prop your pregnant feet up during lunch and don’t keep them in the shade….

Seriously… I feel sorry for white people. Sunburns SUCK! i’ve only been sunburned a few times in my life, and burng your feet is the worst!

Due to this newfound pain, we decided to spend the next day checking out some sights that didn’t involve a lot of sun. We went for a drive to and got to meet this little fellow!

is this a little monkey, or is it the goon????

The next day we packed up and headed for Tulum…. but that will have to wait for the next post. Maybe that will come tomorrow… maybe not!

however, Tomorrow is 28 weeks… which means we enter the third trimester! Which means we’ll be having a BABY in 12-14 weeks. Um… yeah. CRAZY!

There was little knitting on this trip.. it was mostly on the plane, but I did get part of a sock done and an entire baby sweater. I’ll post pix of the sweater when it’s all finished (read:never)

Vacation T minus 20 hours March 3, 2006

Filed under: Uncategorized — mamazen @ 10:15 pm

Yes… you read that right.. I’m getting on a plane and going to Mexico in 20 hours. Not that I’m counting, or that I desperately need it or anything! We’re spending 3 nights in Playa del Carmen (just south of Cancun) then two nights on the beach in Tulum, then 3 nights on Isla de Mujeres (the island for the Myan Goddess of Fertility – funny, isn’t it!). I plan on lots of fun, sun, and relaxation. All that’s left to do is to clean house, go to Joan’s Memorial service tomorrow, and pack.

So…. the big question…… What knitting projects go with me? Ah! what a difficult decision! I think i’ll take….
1. Some lovely Koigu and start some socks – but don’t know what pattern yet
2. Worsted wt wool to make more soakers for the triplets.
3. Cotton for a sweater for my babe. I think I’ll do another Top down cardi.. easy, fast.

These are all small projects, that will need only a few skeins each. This way, my yarn can all be in a carry on :) I’m sooooo smart!

Of course there will be pictures posted of the fun, the sun, the relaxation (the belly in a bikini) and the knitting. I’ll miss you all, and I’ll see you in 10 days!

Yippie for Vacation!!!
